Subsistence farmers in Kawambwa district in Luapula province are up in arms against the the PF government Food Reserve Agency (FRA) for delaying to pay them their money after selling their maize to the agency.
Angry farmers from Mwansabombwe, Kawambwa Central and Pambashe, who stormed the District Commissioner’s office yesterday, said they have stayed in the area for about a month without being paid their money.
The farmers, who also threatened to spend a night outside the District Commissioner’s office, Ivo Mpasa lamented that they have become destitute due to the delays by the government agency to pay them their money.
They have demanded to be paid through the counter, saying there are problems with some account numbers at Zanaco Kawambwa branch.
The irate farmers have also accused the FRA of delaying to deliver empty grain bags to the area when time is running out.
And the District Commissioner, Mr Mpasa, in the presence of FRA Marketing Assistant, Thompson Mbuzi urged the farmers to be patient as the agency is trying to solve the problems between Zanaco and Cavmont banks.
However, Mr Mpasa has appealed to the FRA to urgently deliver emptygrain bags to Kawambwa in order to ease farmers’ problems.
He observed that the 100,000 empty grain bags that the FRA wants tobring to Luapula province are not enough and asked the FRA to consider increasing the number.
