For once, Paramount chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people of Eastern Province has put his people in front of his belly and pockets by urging government to reverse the removal of maize subsidies and reduction of fertilizer packs for the input support programme.

Chief Mpezeni said this when Vice-President Guy Scott paid a courtesy call on him at his palace saying people are starving in the area.

He said it will be a mistake for government to insist on removing the maize subsidies and reducing the fertilizer packs to farmers.

Chief Mpezeni, who campaigned heavily for the Patriotic Front government, said government’s decision to remove the subsidies will have a negative impact on the people especially when it comes to food security.

“We don’t want you to remove fertilizer subsidies. There is a lot of hunger here and you know farmers are selling maize in Malawi because government has not yet opened market,” he said through an interpreter.

The PF government abruptly removed subsidies on maize, fuel and fertiliser input and the decision had been met with strong opposition as it delivered untold misery on the citizens.
